About Palghar

Palghar happens to be a town in the Konkan Division of Maharashtra. It is also a municipal council which is situated approximately 87 kms away from the Northern Mumbai. The town is positioned on Mumbai Suburban Railway’s Western Line. It lies on the occupied rail corridor of Mumbai-Ahmedabad. 



Palghar is also the administrative capital of the Palghar district which has been recently established. From the west of Mumbai to Ahmedabad NH 8 (situated at Manor) the town of Palghar is just 15 kms away and from the North of the Virar city it is just 35 kms away. The town is positioned at 19.69 degrees in the North and 72.76 degrees in the East. The average elevation of the town is 23 feet or 7 m.

According to the census of 2011, the population of Palghar was 68930. The female and male population percentages were 47.1 percent and 52.9 percent respectively. The average literacy rate of the town is 77.52 percent which is greater than the national average. i.e 59.5 percent. The female and male literacy rates are 73.35 percent and 81.2 percent respectively. About 11.8 percent of the total population belongs to the age group of less than 6 years.

The major part of the population Hindus and the rest are Muslims, Buddhists and Jains. A minority of people also belong to the Sikh community and a few to the Christian community. The official language of Palghar is Marathi. Besides Marathi, Vanjari, Vadvali and Varli are some other dialects that are also spoken in the town. Due to a minority of Muslim and Gujarati crowd, Urdu and Gujarati are also spoken here.

History of Palghar

Palghar was declared as the 36th district of Maharashtra in the year 2014 on the 1st of August. Vasai, Javhar and Palghar belong to the Palghar District and they all have a golden historical heritage. Vasai belonged to the Portuguese Empire. Later Chimaji Aappa defeated the Portuguese and gained victory over Vasai and fixed a flag of Maratha on the Vasai city. The Palghar town was considered to be one of the most significant points of Chalejav Campaign in the year 1942. 

In the year 1942 on the 14th August, Palghar witnessed a rebellion in which many martyrs sacrificed their lives. Ramachandra Mahadev Churi, Kashinath Padghare, Sukur Govind More, Ramchandra Bhimashankara Tiwari and Govind Ganesh Thakur are the names of the 5 renowned martyrs. In order to commemorate these martyrs, the main circle of the town is named as “Paachbatti” (which means “the 5 lights”). 

Culture of Palghar

Malhar Koli, Warli, Wadwal, Katkari and Vanjari are the various communities that dwell in Palghar. The Tarapa dance form and the Warli Art form were originated from these communities. The history of Warli Art dates back to about 1100 years. The Warli Art has a huge demand in the foreign countries.

Transport in Palghar

The town is well-linked through rail and road transport. Palghar also boasts to be the divisional head of the MSRTC (Maharashtra State Road Transport Corp.). The Maharashtra State Road transport connects many towns in all over the state including Pune, Nasik, Thane, Kalyan, Miraj, Aurangabad, Alibag, Nandurbar, Ahmednagar, Shirdi, Vaduj, Bhiwandi and Bhusaval.

The main rail head of the town is the Palghar Railway Station which lies on the Mumbai Suburban Railways Western Railway line. The railway station of Palghar is well-connected to many important cities in India. One can avail MEMUs, shuttles or locals trains (EMU) for daily commute. There are also a few trains that stop at Palghar for example- the Valsad Express.
